How to use Stories
Short picture stories that help your child know what to expect.
Stories are short picture stories, told in your child's own voice ("I brush my teeth"), that explain what happens in a situation and what your child can do.
How to read a story
Open a story and read it page by page with the big Next and Back buttons. Each page has one picture and one or two short sentences. Tap the speaker button to hear the page read aloud.
MyHappySky starts with four stories:
- Brushing my teeth
- Going to the doctor
- A new place
- When plans change
When to read them
- Before the event. Read "Going to the doctor" in the days before a checkup, not in the waiting room for the first time.
- More than once. Stories work through repetition. Many children like the same story many times.
- On calm days. A story is easier to take in when your child is relaxed.
- After, too. Reading a story after an event can help your child remember that it went okay.
Tips
- Read it the same way. Keep the words the same each time, so your child knows what's coming next.
- Point to the pictures. Pointing while you read connects the words and the picture.
- Let your child turn the pages. Tapping Next gives your child some control over the story's pace.
- Pair it with a tool. The toothbrush story goes well with the Toothbrush routine, and "When plans change" goes well with My day.
Sound
The speaker plays only when it's tapped. You can choose the voice in Settings in the parent portal.
