How to use Potty, Toothbrush and Bath time
Step-by-step picture routines for the bathroom, one step at a time.
Potty, Toothbrush and Bath time break everyday routines into small steps, with one picture for each step.
How they work
Each routine shows one step at a time, with a large picture and a short label, such as "Wash hands." When the step is done, your child taps Done, and the next step appears. The steps are always in the same order, so the routine becomes familiar.
- Potty walks through going to the bathroom, from "Go to the bathroom" to "Wash hands."
- Toothbrush includes a 2-minute brush-along, with a picture that shows time passing, so your child knows how long to keep brushing.
- Bath time goes from running the water to putting on pajamas.
Tap the speaker to hear a step read out loud.
Tips
- Stand beside your child. Point to each picture and do the step together. Over time, you'll do less and your child will do more.
- Keep the same order. Follow the steps as shown, every time, so each one cues the next.
- Make it pleasant. A favorite toy in the bath or a song while brushing can help.
- Use a regular time. For the potty, a regular time (after meals or before leaving the house) makes the routine part of the day.
- Accidents happen. Stay calm and matter-of-fact, help clean up, and try again next time.
- Ask your child's doctor if toileting or toothbrushing is a constant struggle. They can check for anything that might be getting in the way.
Make it fit your bathroom
If your routine is different, start with the steps that match and skip the rest for now.
