How to use First, then

Show one task first and the thing your child wants right after it.

First, then shows two cards side by side: what happens first, and what happens right after. It answers the question your child may not be able to ask: "When do I get to do the thing I want?"

How to set it up

  1. Pick a First card: the task, such as "Shoes on" or "Brush teeth."
  2. Pick a Then card: something your child wants, such as "Play," "Outside" or a favorite snack.
  3. Show the board to your child and say it simply: "First shoes, then outside."

When the first thing is done, tap the First card. It's marked done, and the Then card takes the spotlight.

Tips

  • Pick a Then your child really wants. The board works because the second card is worth waiting for.
  • Keep First short. A small, clear task works better than a long one, especially at the start.
  • Keep your promise. When First is done, give the Then right away. Your child learns the board can be trusted.
  • Use the same words every time. "First, then" is easier to follow when it always sounds the same.
  • Add the timer if waiting is hard. If the Then has to wait a few minutes, pair the board with the Timer, so your child can see the time running down.

When it doesn't go to plan

If your child gets upset, stay calm and point to the board again. It's okay to make First smaller ("First one shoe, then outside") and build up from there.

Showing the board before you start helps too. When your child already knows the plan, the change feels less sudden.
